Description
The Education of Little Tree tells the story of a boy orphaned at a young age, who is adopted by his Cherokee grandmother and half-Cherokee grandfather in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee during the Great Depression. "Little Tree," as his grandparents call him, is taught how to hunt and survive in the mountains, to respect nature in the Cherokee Way, taking only what is needed and leaving the rest for nature to run its course. Little Tree also learns about the harsh ways of white businessmen and tax collectors, and how his Granpa scares them away from his illegal attempts to enter the cash economy in humorous vignettes. Granma introduces Little Tree to the joys of reading and education. However, when Little Tree is taken away by whites for schooling, we witness the cruelty inflicted upon Indian children in an effort to assimilate them, and Little Tree's contrasting perceptions of the Anglo world and the Cherokee Way.
